Carmel’s Sue Maki announces run for County Council

Sue Maki, a 30-year Hamilton County resident, has filed for candidacy for Hamilton County Council District 1. Maki currently serves as Manager of Environmental Initiatives and Education for Carmel Utilities.

“Several community leaders approached me to run for County Council. I love Hamilton County and this position is an opportunity to make the biggest impact at a county level. My commitment to residents is to keep taxes low while maintaining high quality of life high through smart local economic growth and a strong public safety system,” said Maki.

In Maki’s current role at Carmel Utilities, her focus is on research, program implementation, facilitating efficient communication and customer education, listening to residents and in turn, leading the environmental initiatives in Carmel. Maki played an integral role in Carmel achieving the 2016 EPA WaterSense Excellence Award and the 2014 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence for Recycling.

Maki’s leadership within Hamilton County and community service dedication speak for itself. Maki serves as President of the Hamilton County Solid Waste Board and has previously served as President of the Hamilton County Tourism Commission, President of The Rotary Club of Carmel and President of the Carmel Middle School PTO.

Making an impact across all towns and cities in Hamilton County, Maki served as Executive Director of the Hamilton County Leadership Academy from 2000 to 2003. She is also a 1999 graduate. Maki spent 18 years in the insurance industry, with the majority of those years being in a leadership role. She brings a high level of both public and private sector professional experience to her candidacy.

“I’m the right person for this position. I listen carefully to the residents and I am responsive to their needs. I make decisions based on feedback, research and doing what’s best for the county,” Maki says.

Maki holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Anderson University and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Baldwin-Wallace University Berea, Ohio. Sue has also earned a variety of professional designations such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP). Maki lives in Carmel with her husband of 35 years.
