Carmel’s Brian Waddell commits to Purdue

Carmel basketball star Brian Waddell made it official on Wednesday: He is headed to Purdue University.
The 6-foot-7 senior made the announcement on his Twitter account: “Excited to announce I’ve committed to Purdue University!” Waddell had become a prize target for the Boilermakers in recent week, with his stock rising after leading the Greyhounds to a Class 4A state championship on April 3. Waddell had a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds in Carmel’s win over Lawrence North.
There is a family connection, too. Waddell’s father Matt Waddell played for Purdue in the 90’s. He was part of two Big Ten titles that the Boilermakers won in 1994 and 1995.
Waddell will be part of a freshman class that is full of talent and state champions. Other incoming freshmen that have committed to Purdue are Caleb Furst, the 2021 Mr. Basketball who won two 2A state titles with Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, and Trey Kaufman-Renn, twice a 3A state champion with Silver Creek.
