The City of Carmel is set to begin expansion of its police department. The nearly $40 million renovation will include relocating the Carmel City Court into police headquarters and moving the IT department into the John W. Hensel Government Building located near 106th Street and College Avenue.
The project will expand the current police department east onto the Huntington Bank property and will add an additional 47,000 square feet to the current three-story facility built in 1990.
“The new space will be a welcome and much-needed addition,” Carmel Police Chief Jim Barlow said. “In 1990, we had 49 sworn officers and 17 civilians. Today we have 134 sworn officers, 25 civilians, four part-time employees, a prosecutor and athletic trainer.”
Barlow also indicated the expansion would allow his investigation division, which is housed at a remote satellite facility, to return to police headquarters.
“I appreciate the mayor and city council’s support in not only meeting our needs now, but also 20 to 30 years into the future,” Barlow concluded.
