Carmel tennis advances to state semi-finals

Carmel advanced to the semi-finals of the IHSAA state girls tennis tournament by winning a tough quarter-final with Providence Friday at Center Grove.
The No. 1-ranked Greyhounds edged No. 3 Providence 3-2. Carmel got its wins from No. 3 singles Franny Werner and the doubles teams of No. 1 Emma Brune and Grace Marchese and No. 2 Leila Antony and Apurva Manas; all of the wins were in straight sets.
The Greyhounds will take on No. 9 Brownsburg in this morning’s semi-finals, which begin at 10 a.m. at North Central. In the other semi-final, No. 11 Jasper will play No. 2 Cathedral. The winners will play for the state championship at 2 p.m., also at North Central.

No. 1 singles: Lauren Lemonds lost to Halli Trinkle 6-1, 0-6, 7-5
No. 2 singles: Sydney Morris lost to Natalie Boesing 6-3, 6-3
No. 3 singles: Franny Werner def. Maria Popson 6-0, 6-2
No. 1 doubles: Emma Brune and Grace Marchese def. Hannah Conder and Heidi Popson 6-2, 6-3
No. 2 doubles: Leila Antony and Apurva Manas def. Izzy Coe and Clare Hooper 6-0, 6-2
