The REPORTER

Carmel swimmer Alex Shackell earned the first of what will probably be many medals in her swimming career on Thursday.

The Greyhounds incoming junior was part of the United States Women’s 4×200 freestyle relay at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, which are taking place now in Fukuoka, Japan. Shackell anchored the American team on its way to a second-place finish. The team’s time of 7 minutes, 41.38 seconds earned the U.S. a silver medal.

Shackell swam the relay with Katie Ledecky, Erin Gemmell and Bella Sims. The team finished behind only Australia, which set a new world record in the event by clocking in at 7:37.50, a new world record. Shackell later told swimswam.com that she was “surprised to be put on the anchor but didn’t question her coaches decision and made the most of the opportunity.”
