Gov. Eric Holcomb recently named Carmel High School student Iris Yan to the 2020 Governor’s STEM Team, according to State Reps. Donna Schaibley (R-Carmel) and Jerry Torr (R-Carmel).
Yan is one of four students selected for their work in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics and will receive $1,000 through the College Choice 529 Program. Schaibley said part of the reason why Yan was chosen for this award is because of her hard work and dedication to earn perfect marks on the math and science portions of the ACT, as well as in math, chemistry and physics on the SAT.
“Yan’s success is a product of her focus and drive, and the educators and supporters surrounding her,” Schaibley said. “It is encouraging to see students from our community reach these academic achievements as they set themselves up for success in their careers down the road.”
Torr said Yan is a two-time honoree in the United States National Chemistry Olympiad Exam in 2018 and 2019, and obviously among the top 20 percent student chemists in the nation. She was also chosen to attend the MIT Research Science Institute in 2019.
“Indiana is home to students who encompass an abundance of talent, and Yan is among the best,” Torr said. “Her achievements reach beyond her classroom work as she excels on the national level. She clearly has a bright future ahead of her.”
Yan plans to attend Harvard University in the fall.
