On Monday morning, Carmel police responded to a 911 call at a residence in the 14300 block of Riverrock Court regarding a subject threatening suicide.
According to police, the original 911 caller reported the suspect had a gun, and during the call, dispatchers heard gunshots in the background.
As police arrived, officers found two people had been shot. Taylor Leigh Cox, 28, Carmel, died as a result of gunshots and a 66-year-old female who was not identified by police was treated at a local hospital for gunshot wounds.
Officers later located the suspect, identified as Julio Cesar Virula, 26, Carmel. Reports indicate Virula attempted to flee from officers, and during a short foot pursuit, a Carmel police officer shot and killed Virula.
Sgt. D.J. Schoeff, a spokesperson for the Carmel Police Department said, “The officer responded and took action.”
A press release provided to the Reporter from the City of Carmel stated, “In order to prevent any further danger to our community or officers, one officer discharged their service weapon.”
Police have not identified the officer involved in the shooting. Police also did not indicate if the suspect fired shots at police officers.
Investigators say they are in the preliminary stages of conducting a professional and thorough investigation regarding the circumstances of the incident.
