Carmel looks ready to go for a 33rd consecutive girls swimming state championship.
The IHSAA state swimming preliminaries took place Friday at the IU Natatorium, and the Greyhounds had a solid evening, qualifying 25 swims for this afternoon’s finals. Carmel advanced 20 swims to the championship heat and five more to the consolation heat.
Kelly Pash will be seeded first in two events: The individual medley and the butterfly. Ashlyn Underhill earned the first seed in the 200 freestyle, and the Greyhounds also took the top seed in all three relays.
Other championship heat qualifiers for Carmel are: Kendra Bowen in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Gretchen Lueking in the 200 and 100 freestyles, Madelyn Christman in the IM and backstroke, Colleen Duffy in the 50 free and backstroke, Avery Williams in the 50 and 100 freestyles, Meredith Berglund in the butterfly, Underhill in the 500 free, Morgan Croaning in the 500 free and Taylor Conley in the backstroke. Consolation qualifiers for the Greyhounds are Grace Pangburn in the 50 free, Hannah White in the butterfly, Rachel Young in the 100 free, MacKenna Lieske in the breaststroke and Maggie Love in the breaststroke.
Fishers sent 13 swims into today’s finals, with five advancing to the championship heat. The Tigers qualified all three relays for the “A” final, in addition to Hannah Pratt in the 200 free and Samantha Hietpas in the 500 free.
Fishers also has eight consolation heat qualifiers: Abigail Jahns in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Corinne Yorkman in the IM, Nicole Rueff in the butterfly, Kara Robeson in the butterfly, Pratt in the 100 free, Morgan Booth in the 500 free and Lydia Reade in the breaststroke.
Hamilton Southeastern advanced eight swims to the finals, with six heading to the championship heat. The Royals got all three of their relays to the “A” final, along with Molly Pedersen in the 200 and 100 freestyles and Abigail Harter in the backstroke. Hannah Pugh reached the consolation final of the butterfly, and Molly Robinson qualified for the breaststroke consolations.
Noblesville has three swims in today’s finals. Sammy Huff advanced to the championship heat of the breaststroke, and the Millers qualified their medley and 400 free relays to the consols. Westfield got swims into the consolation finals: Erin Verbrugge in the backstroke and the Shamrocks’ 400 free relay.
Today’s action starts with the diving first round at 9 a.m., with the semi-finals to follow immediately. The swimming and diving finals are set to start at 1 p.m.
Positions 1-8 qualify for the championship heat, positions 9-16 qualify for the consolation heat, positions 17 and 18 are alternates.
