The Carmel girls swim team has set itself up well to continue its record state championship streak after its performance in Friday’s state preliminaries at the IU Natatorium.
The Greyhounds qualified 24 swims into today’s finals, with 16 reaching the championship heat and eight more making the consolation heat. That includes five top seeds.
Emma Nordin will be seeded first in two events, the 200 and 500 freestyles; she is the defending state champion in both events. Kelly Pash is rated first in the 100 free, and Carmel’s 200 and 400 freestyle relays both will be seeded first.
Sammie Burchill is seeded second in the individual medley, the event in which she is the defending state champ. Burchill also holds the second seed in the backstroke.
Fishers qualified 14 swims on to Saturday, with five in the championship and nine in the consolations. Lauryn Parrish reached the championship final of the 200 and 100 freestyles.
Hamilton Southeastern qualified seven swims for the finals, getting three in the championship and four in the consolations. The Royals’ medley relay is in the championship heat, along with Hannah Pugh in the butterfly and a freshman, Abigail Harter, in the backstroke.
Westfield’s Erin Verbrugge reached the consolation heat in the backstroke.
Noblesville’s Alexa Akers competed in the butterfly prelims, finishing 24th.
The meet begins at 9 a.m. this morning with diving prelims, then the swimming and diving finals begin at 1 p.m.
