A new analysis ranks Carmel among the top 10 U.S. cities (at eighth place together with Windermere, Fla.) with the biggest homes, based on the average square footage of owner-occupied houses.

According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (2022 release), the average home in Carmel is 3,062 square feet, placing the city eighth nationally. That puts Carmel ahead of traditionally space-rich towns in Overland Park, Kan., and just behind Herriman, Utah (3,105 square feet) and Southampton, N.Y. (3,256 square feet).

“Carmel really stood out in the data,” said Oliver Lindebod, a researcher from Anyhoa who compiled the ranking. “At a time when many U.S. cities are shrinking home sizes, Carmel remains a place where families have room to grow.”
