The global population of India – including many who live in Carmel – are celebrating Wednesday’s historic landing of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the southern polar region of the moon.
India became the fourth country to execute a moon landing and the first to land in this particular region of the moon, where it is believed water and ice are present and could potentially be used as a resource for future missions to the moon.
The successful landing came just days after a Russian spacecraft crashed while attempting a similar landing.
Mayor Jim Brainard joins Carmel’s local Indian population and the city’s new Indian sister city, Visakhapatnam, in celebrating the historic achievement.
“This is a profound accomplishment for the Indian Space Research Organization and very exciting for the people of India,” Brainard said. “This tremendous accomplishment shows the world that democratic republics continue to advance human civilization for everyone’s benefit.”
Earlier this month, the Indiana India Business Council honored Mayor Brainard at its annual Gala, giving the Indiana Ratna award for his significant contributions towards strengthening cultural, educational, political, social, and economic ties and his profound impact in both Indiana and India during his seven terms as Carmel’s mayor.
