The City of Carmel announced Friday afternoon that the Carmel Marathon presented by Franciscan Health is expecting more than 4,000 participants today, the largest field in its 13-year history. The popular race in Carmel will bring in participants from 40 states and six countries.

The race course begins and finishes at the Palladium at the Center for Performing Arts with the course reaching east-to-west from Hazel Dell Parkway to Illinois Street.

Motorists looking to avoid the marathon course are recommended to use 116th and 146th streets for east/west routes, and Keystone Avenue and U.S. 31 for north/south routes. All events begin at 8 a.m., with a maximum course time of 6.5 hours. The course and finish line will officially close at 2:30 p.m. All lanes of all roads will open throughout the morning immediately following the last race participant.

Eastbound and westbound City Center Drive between Veterans Way and Range Line Road will close briefly for the beginning of the race. After the runners have passed, eastbound City Center Drive only will reopen from Veterans Way to Range Line Road.

Other temporary single-lane delays will occur between approximately 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 8.
