The City of Carmel and its record of low crime and safe neighborhoods has been named the No. 1 safest city in Indiana with populations of more than 30,000, according to a new survey released this week by Safewise. The survey utilizes federal crime statistics to determine results.
Carmel’s violent crime rate is 0.5 per 100,000 population. Its property crime rate is 6.5. Indiana’s violent crime rate of 3.1 is below the national average of 4.0 and represents a 13 percent decrease. The nationwide violent crime rate decreased by less than 1 percent during the same period.

Brainard
“Maintaining one of the safest cities in Indiana is something we are proud of in Carmel, and we know our current and future residents count on this as part of their experience living in our great city,” Mayor Jim Brainard said. “I give a lot of credit to our Carmel Police Department which has a record of excellence in patrolling our streets and neighborhoods and in working to anticipate potential criminal activity and working to stop it before that happens.”
Overall, Carmel ranked fourth behind St. John, Zionsville, and Dyer, each of which have much smaller populations. Based on FBI statistics, Carmel’s violent crime rate and property crime rate is well below the state and national average.
The State of Safety Survey results also reflected this decrease, with 11 percent of Indiana residents claiming to have experienced a violent crime in the 12 months prior to the survey (a 15 percent decrease).
That said, 49 percent of the Hoosiers surveyed felt concerned about violent crime, which represents a 5 percent increase compared to the previous year’s survey. Gun violence concerns rose by 8 percent. Compared to its regional neighbors (Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin), Indiana saw the most significant decrease in violent crime.
