On Wednesday evening, the Carmel Police Department held the 43rd annual Law Enforcement Memorial to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the Carmel community. Debbie Laird served as the keynote speaker, and she shared the profound story of her son, Officer Jake Laird of the Indianapolis Police Department, who lost his life in the line of duty on Aug. 18, 2004.

Mrs. Laird’s powerful words reminded everyone of the true meaning of sacrifice and the lasting impact fallen heroes have on their families, fellow officers, and the entire community. Her strength and grace in sharing Jake’s story touched every heart in attendance.

Following the ceremony, the memorial wreath was presented to the Laird family, who then placed it in the Heroes of Public Safety section at Crown Hill Cemetery – a touching tribute to Jake and all fallen officers.

To the Laird family and all families of fallen heroes: your loved ones’ sacrifice will never be forgotten, and their legacy lives on through the countless lives they touched.
