For the first time in what has been a tough season, the Carmel girls basketball team is on a win streak.
The Greyhounds made it two in a row Tuesday by beating Columbus North 46-31 at the Eric Clark Activity Center. Carmel outscored the Bull Dogs in all four quarters, although it was close in the first half. The Hounds led 9-8 after one quarter and 19-17 at halftime.
But Carmel’s defense stepped it up in the second half. The Greyhounds outscored Columbus North 14-6 in the third period, with Mackenzie Woods, Taryn Fisher and Hannah Lach all scoring four points. Carmel pulled away further in the fourth quarter with 13 more points, including five from Fisher.
“The girls are just doing a great job,” said Greyhounds coach Erin Trimpe. “We talked about January being a brand-new month for us and needing to buy into the things that we’re doing well. And I thought tonight was one of the first nights that we really just put a total team effort together.”
Lach finished the game with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Woods and Fisher both had nine points, with Fisher making five steals and Woods collecting four rebounds.
“Our whole team has gone through a lot, especially with injuries and stuff, and I feel like this win streak that we have going right now is really a good boost of confidence for everyone on the team,” said Lach.
Carmel is 3-14 and travels to Mishawaka Marian Saturday for an afternoon game.
