Carmel FOP endorses first Democrat Sara Draper for City Council

Carmel Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 185 announced last week its endorsement of Democrat Sara Draper for Carmel City Council At-large.

Draper said she is delighted to have earned the endorsement.

“When I’m elected, I want to ensure I operate from a place of true understanding, not just of the community, but the public servants who keep it safe,” Draper said.

Draper enrolled in the Citizens Police Academy, an 11-week program open to all, and graduated in May. “I wanted to learn all I could about law enforcement and the needs of the CPD,” she said.

“We think you are the first Democrat that the Lodge has ever endorsed,” replied Lodge 185 Vice President Matthew Broadnax to Draper’s appreciative response. “Sara has impressed the membership of the Carmel FOP Lodge 185 with her dedication to public safety and her desire to see Carmel as one of the best and safest places to live.”

Draper said it was the Carmel Police Department’s commitment to its officers’ physical and mental health that impressed her most.

“I knew before I participated in the Citizen’s Academy that CPD was one of only 1 percent of Law Enforcement Organizations that are globally accredited. The Academy allowed me to understand why,” Draper said. “Our officers are incredibly well-trained and provided with the necessary tools to do their jobs, but what surprised me was the dedication to providing officers physical and mental health services. In fact, those mental health services have already saved two officers’ lives. It’s only right that these brave people who dedicate their lives to keeping their community safe, are well cared for. I will always support adequately funding and caring for our first responders.”

Sara Draper is an Oxford University graduate with professional expertise in finance and market research. She has spent time on the board of the Village of WestClay. She’s an adoptive “Mum” and former foster parent. She is now a Guardian ad Litem, advocating for children of abuse/neglect cases in the court system in Hamilton County.
