Carmel firefighters assist Indiana Task Force 1 in Houston

Carmel firefighters Kurt Weddington and Scott Tierney have been deployed to Texas as part of the task force assisting in rescue efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

After a few days of waiting for assignment, Weddington and Tierney, a part of the 14-person Task Force group of water rescue firefighters are making their way to Beaumont, Texas today on a mission to help in any way they can, including water rescue and humanitarian work – going door-to-door to check on residents who chose to remain in their homes but may have now run out of water, food or have lost power.

Another group, the hazardous materials support group, has already been busy providing supplies and testing equipment to keep rescue personnel clean of the “soup kitchen of contaminants” in the waters.

“We are engaged on many fronts,” said Mike Pruitt, spokesman for the Task Force. “This has been a big undertaking but everybody is healthy and everybody is doing good.”

Pruitt is providing daily reports that are linked to the Task Force Facebook page for anyone to view. You can follow along here: facebook.com/IndianaUSARTaskForce1.
