The Carmel boys tennis team completed the Triple Crown on Saturday, as senior Presley Thieneman won the IHSAA singles state championship, and senior Uday Lomada and junior Jones McNamar teamed up to win the doubles title.
Thieneman only lost three games in his two matches, beating Lapel’s Jesse McCurdy 6-0, 6-1 in the semi-finals and Perry Meridian’s Sajin Smith in the finals. Thieneman finished the season 26-0 and has committed to play tennis at Northwestern University.
“Presley was on another level today,” said Carmel coach Bryan Hanan.
Lomada and McNamar won their semi-final over Homestead’s Tim Steiner and Bryant Zitlaw 7-5, 6-3. “Those guys were right even with us,” said Hanan. The Carmel team then triumphed in the final over Charlie Morton and Kathir Venkat 6-4, 6-1. The team completed their season with a 27-0 record.
This is the fourth time in IHSAA history that a team has swept the Triple Crown, and the second time for Carmel, which also scored the sweep in 2016.
