The Carmel boys tennis team won its state quarter-final match on Friday, advancing to this morning’s semi-finals.
The No. 1-ranked and five-time defending state champion Greyhounds beat No. 5 North Central 4-1 in a match that took place at Zionsville’s Pearson Automotive Tennis Club after rains forced all four state quarter-finals indoors. Carmel got wins from No. 2 singles Eli Mercer 6-3, 6-2 and No. 3 singles Rocky Li 6-2, 6-3. In doubles, No. 1 Jack Jentz and Srisanth Malpeddi triumphed 7-6 (3), 6-3 and No. 2 Braedon McIntyre and Adrien Qi were 7-5, 6-2 winners.
The Greyhounds are undefeated for the season at 22-0 and will host today’s state semi-finals and championship matches at the Todd Witsken Tennis Center. Carmel takes on No. 2 Columbus North in one semi-final, with No. 7 Zionsville playing No. 12 Jasper in the other semi-final.
Both matches start at 10 a.m., with the winners playing for the state championship at 2 p.m.
