Carmel-based Seven Corners awarded contract to provide health care services to Minnesota prison

Seven Corners, the Carmel-based travel insurer for 30 years which also engages in specialty benefits management, was selected by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to become the new Comprehensive Medical Services contractor for inmates housed within the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Sandstone, a low-security federal correctional institution located in Sandstone, Minn.

This multimillion-dollar contract with the largest institution in Minnesota will extend over a five-year period, connecting Sandstone’s 1,100 male inmates with medical providers and care.

The contract, which begins on Jan. 1, 2023, is the second of its kind for Seven Corners within the state of Minnesota. In December of 2016, Seven Corners began providing health care services to 300 male inmates at the Federal Prison Camp (FPC) in Duluth, Minn. The contract with FPC Duluth was recently re-awarded to Seven Corners effective at the beginning of 2023.

“This partnership with the Federal Correctional Institution in Sandstone is an outstanding opportunity to develop stronger relationships with Minnesota-based community providers while also simplifying processes for all parties involved,” said Melisa Dickinson-Franklin, senior manager and head of Government Solutions for Seven Corners. “Seven Corners now serves two out of the four institutions within the state, further strengthening our ability to connect inmates to outstanding health care services. An additional benefit includes lifting the weight of this responsibility off of the institution by removing the logistical difficulties and time-consuming tasks that can come with coordinating care independently.”

Through this partnership, Seven Corners assumes the responsibility of fostering relationships with community providers that will provide care to inmates. Additional duties include scheduling inmate appointments, processing claims and managing essential information such as client medical records.

Telehealth will be prioritized by Seven Corners when it is best fit to support inmates’ health and wellness. This route will provide a convenient and safe environment for primary care. In addition to primary care, this partnership also connects Sandstone inmates to cardiology, otolaryngology, general surgery, orthopedic surgery and urology care.
