Carmel baseball picks up first win

The Carmel baseball team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, beating Class 4A No. 8 Penn 6-5 at Hartman Field.
The Greyhounds got the game’s first run in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Brooks hit a right field single to score Drew Kelly, who had led off the inning with a double.
The Kingsmen scored twice in the top of the third to take the lead, but Carmel got it right back in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back doubles. Kelly was first, sending an 0-1 pitch into left field to get Will Richter home. Kelly quickly scored, as Evan Petruzzi smacked another 0-1 pitch into center field.
The ‘Hounds added two more runs in the fourth to lead 5-2. Brooks got home on a fielder’s choice from Richter, then Jared Greene stole home plate.
Penn got two runs in the fifth inning, but would get no closer. Carmel added a run in the sixth inning when Drew Olssen scored on an error.
Kelly and Jack Van Remortel both finished the game 2-for-3. Zach Vogt pitched five innings for the win.
The Greyhounds are 1-2 and will host 4A No. 6 Hamilton Southeastern at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
