Carmel Arts Council welcomes guest artist Thúy Dang to ‘Art in the Garden’

Carmel Arts Council will welcome artist Thúy Dang to its upcoming “Art in the Garden” event. This event will be part of Meet Me on Main, a monthly activity along Main Street in the Arts & Design District in Carmel, sponsored by Allied Solutions.

Dang

On Saturday, May 8 from 4 to 8 p.m., Thúy Dang will be pallet painting. Born in Saigon, South Vietnam, she has had a passion for art since early childhood. She has been through hard times and understands the difficulties life can present. She uses her art in an effort not to let those challenges get her down. She paints using oils and acrylics which bring texture and vibrance to her paintings. For this particular demonstration, Dang will be using oils.

There will be a children’s table set up so that everyone can join in the fun. Children will use washable materials and have disposable painting smocks.  Masks, social distancing and frequent cleanings will be implemented.

Dang is the current President of International Women Indiana (IWI), a social, recreational and educational group of more than 200 women from about 30 countries which offers friendship to women arriving in Indiana from around the world and other states.

Dang will have a planned demonstration for visitors who visit the Garden outside of the World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery at 40 W. Main St., Carmel.

As a part of her demonstrations, Dang includes Vietnamese music for her guests. Some of the instruments that may be featured are a đàn tranh, a Vietnamese zither; a đàn tỳ bà, a traditional plucked string instrument; a đàn nguyệt; a trống cơm, a rice drum; a đàn nhị, a sort of vertical violin; and a sáo trúc, or a bamboo flute.

Dang will feature information about the various instruments for guests to read and learn more about their specific uses.

Dang has lived and experienced many different cultures and brings them and her country into her paintings, which she is happy to share with the community. She will share her method of painting with palette knives during her time in the garden where guests can look forward to watching her create an original oil.

This is a free event, but donations are welcome to help defer the cost of supplies.

About Carmel Arts Council

The mission of the Carmel Arts Council is to encourage and promote the arts for all ages through its leadership, financial, and volunteer support in order to nourish a vibrant culture in the Carmel community. The Carmel Arts Council Children’s Art Gallery, featuring the “World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery,” was formally opened by Mayor James Brainard in January 1998. It was the first gallery in Carmel’s Arts and Design District. The Gallery features student art from all grade levels of the Carmel-Clay School System and Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Carmel Arts Council also displays student art from community nonprofit organizations. The building was originally a wing from the 1875 Zina Warren home. In 1975, it was moved to 30 W. Main St. for the nation’s Bicentennial. The gallery was moved to its current location, 40 W. Main St., in 2005. Learn more at CarmelArtsCouncil.org.
