WESTFIELD – The Carmel boys track and field team won a competitive and well-balanced sectional championship on Thursday.

The sectional took place at Westfield’s Riverview Health Stadium this year instead of the usual Carmel Stadium. The Greyhounds finished ahead in a tight battle with Hamilton Southeastern, winning their fourth consecutive sectional title by scoring 124 points. The Royals were a strong second with 113 points.

Carmel won four events. Adom Quist won a very close 110 hurdles battle with Fishers’ Tyler Tarter, as both finished in a time of 14.57 seconds; Quist got first by a few millimeters. Kole Mathison was a double winner in the long-distance events, winning the 1600 run and leading a 1-2 finish in the 3200 run; Tony Provenzano placed second. Drew Franklin dominated the discus, with a winning throw of 188 feet, 5 inches, nearly 29 feet ahead of the state standard.

The Greyhounds also had several athletes finish in the top three in their events, which automatically sends them to next Thursday’s regional at Lafayette Jefferson.

“I’m very happy with what happened today,” said Greyhounds coach Ken Browner. “We got everybody we expected to get out except the 4×1. That was unfortunate, but I still think we have a solid group of guys that can still make a run at it. We just to got to put together another great meet next week.”

Michael Griffith won two events for the Royals, taking the 400 dash and winning the long jump in 23 feet, 1.75 inches. Lamine Sall placed third in the long jump in 22 feet, 1 inch; both HSE jumpers were well ahead of the state standard.

Noblesville placed third with 90 points and won three events. Christ Degni had a hand in all three, as he swept the 100 and 200 dashes, then joined Derrell Coleman, Sidney Weaver and Cameron Wilson for a close victory in the 4×100 relay. The Millers ran the race in 42.55 seconds, Southeastern was second in 42.56 seconds. Silas Newton, Christian Ortiz, Ethan Falconer and Mason Alexander ran for the Royals.

Fishers placed fourth with 86 points. Tyler Tarter won the 300 hurdles, and joined Cavitt Fowler III, Leo Morrow and Makell Wiggins for a victory in the 4×400 relay. Fishers’ JonAnthony Hall placed second in the long jump; his best jump of 22 feet, 7 inches was above the state standard.

Westfield scored 79 points to place fifth. Tom Ewing led the way in the throwing events, placing second in both the discus (176 feet, 3 inches) and shot put (59 feet, 5 inches). Both of Ewing’s throws were well above the state standard.

Guerin Catholic opened the meet with a victory in the 4×800 relay, as the team of Ethan Hines, Jack Weber, Luke Moster, Ben Grissom edged out Carmel by 0.21 seconds. The Golden Eagles finished the race in 7 minutes, 53.35 seconds, while the Greyhounds team of Thomas Biltimier, Charlie Leedke, Drew Grogan and Everett Carlisle clocked in 7:53.56.

Hamilton Heights had two event winners. Colin Wilson won the shot put in 61 feet, 10 inches, well ahead of the state standard, while Peyton McQuinn was first in the pole vault, hitting the standard of 14 feet, 4 inches.

Several other county athletes earned spots at regional with top-three finishes, and several others will get callbacks to the regional as well.
