The IHSAA boys track and field state meet is set for Friday at Ben Davis, and there’s a feeling that Friday night could be a good, good night for the Greyhounds.
Carmel qualified 13 athletes and relays for the state meet. The ‘Hounds have top seeds in four events, including a 1-2 in the 3200 run, and a second seed in three other events.
Sophomore Kole Mathison ran away with the 3200 at last Thursday’s Lafayette Jefferson regional, winning in a time of 9 minutes, 5.98 seconds. His teammate Jacob Fisher got the second seed with a runner-up finish at Lafayette, clocking in at 9:16.95.
Owen Schafer is seeded first in the 400 dash, while Carmel’s 4×100 and 4×400 relays also have first seeds. The Greyhounds’ 4×800 relay is seeded second, as is Zachary Cox in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Cox will be battling it out with Brownsburg’s John Colquitt in both events; Colquitt edged out Cox by 0.04 seconds at Lafayette Jeff to win each hurdle race.
Fishers has a pair of top seeds. Jaylen Castillo is first in the 800 run after his Lafayette Jeff regional time of 1:53.68. He will also likely be running on the Tigers’ top-seeded 4×800 relay. Keefer Soehngen is the second seed in the 400 dash, where he finished 0.11 seconds behind Schafer in Lafayette. Fishers has five state qualifiers in all.
Noblesville sent eight to state, with Andrew Anderson the highest seed. The senior is seeded third in the 800 run. That event will be a fast one, as 10 runners all ran under the state standard at their respective regionals. Mac Smith is seeded fourth in the 100 dash.
Hamilton Southeastern has six state qualifiers, led by Nolan Satterfield. The junior is seeded fourth in the 1600 run, an event in which he won both a sectional and regional championship.
Westfield has two state qualifiers: The Shamrocks’ 4×800 relay team is seeded third and Christiaan Huisden is seeded eighth in the 300 hurdles.
