Boys tennis: Sectionals begin with semi-final matches

The IHSAA boys tennis sectionals began on Wednesday, with Carmel and Hamilton Southeastern hosting semi-final matches.
At the Greyhounds’ Todd Witsken Tennis Center, No. 1-ranked Carmel advanced to the final by beating University 5-0. The ‘Hounds dropped only three games in the five matches.
Carmel will play No. 12 Guerin Catholic in today’s championship, which begins at 4:45 p.m. The Golden Eagles defeated No. 15 Westfield 4-1. All of the matches were decided in straight sets.
The Shamrocks’ win came at No. 1 doubles, with Brett Barnes and Christian Emigh getting a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Barnes and Emigh advanced to the individual tournament, which begins next week.
Over at Southeastern, the No. 10 Royals beat Hamilton Heights 5-0. Southeastern only dropped two games among the five matches.
The Royals will play No. 9 Fishers for the title at 4:30 p.m. today. The Tigers beat Noblesville 4-1 in a hard-fought dual. The Millers’ victory came at No. 1 singles, as Noah Bushong edged out Reese Knoderer in three sets, winning a third-set tiebreak 7-5. Bushong will also move on to the individual tournament next week.
