The Hamilton Southeastern boys tennis team played at the Fort Wayne Carroll Invite on Saturday. The No. 19-ranked Royals placed fourth at the event, finishing 1-2 on the day.
Southeastern beat No. 11 Delta 4-1 in its first round; No. 2 singles Andrew Orme was a 6-3, 6-3 winner, Elias Warling took the No. 3 singles match 6-7, 6-2, 10-3, No. 1 doubles Matthew Parker and Matt Meyer were victorious 6-3, 6-3 and No. 2 doubles Mahek Chougule and McGuire Wolfe won 6-3, 6-3. At No. 1 singles Aiden De Witt battled back to win a second set tiebreak, but fell in the third set super tiebreak 11-9.
In the second round, Southeastern fell to No. 3-ranked Homestead 5-0. “All courts were lost in straight sets,” said HSE coach Kirk Webber. “We fought hard, but were just outmatched by a very talented team.”
The Royals lost to No. 21 Carroll 3-2 in the third round. Southeastern won both doubles matches in straight sets, but were swept in the singles. De Witt and Orme both fell in third set super tiebreaks 10-8. “We were so close, but just came up a few points short from winning the match,” said Webber.”Overall, I thought we played well today,” said Webber. “Getting that first-round win against Delta was big, but at the same time, it was disappointing to only win one match. It would have been nice to pick up that win against Carroll, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. But hopefully we will learn from this experience and find a way to close out the matches next time. Both of our doubles teams had good days, going 2-1 on the day.”
Southeastern is 5-4 and hosts new Hoosier Crossroads Conference opponent Franklin Central on Tuesday.
