Boys tennis: Royals, GC win dual meets

The Hamilton Southeastern boys tennis team got its first win of the season on Thursday, beating Brownsburg 3-2 in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference dual meet.
The Royals clinched the match early with three straight-set victories. Senior Andrew Orme won the No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-0, then sophomore Rohan Golla followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. The No. 1 doubles match was the clincher, as junior Andrew Spirrison and sophomore Paul Schneider were 6-0, 6-2 winners.
“They both served and returned very well tonight and played a very consistent, but aggressive match,” said Southeastern coach Kirk Webber.
At No. 1 singles, Brownsburg’s Petar Petrovic beat Aiden De Witt in straight sets; Weber said that Petrovic is one of the state’s elite players, before falling in straight sets. At No. 2 doubles, senior Evan Wang and sophomore Abhi Chaddha took that match down to the wire before the Bulldogs team won a third set tiebreak, 7-5. Webber said he was proud of the fact that his team left everything they had on the court.
“They played some amazing points and came up with so many clutch shots,” said Webber. “This kind of pressure experience will make them a better doubles team moving forward.”
The Royals are 1-1 and play a dual at North Central on Monday.

Guerin Catholic stayed unbeaten in the early season with a 4-1 win over Brebeuf Jesuit Thursday in the Golden Eagles’ first Circle City Conference dual meet of the year.
Cole Metzger won for Guerin Catholic at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0. The Braves took the No. 1 doubles match, but GC swept the next three, all in three sets. Max Fuller won at No. 2 singles 6-2, 2-6, 6-0; Jak Kolb came back to win the No. 3 singles match 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, and the No. 2 doubles team of John Tiplick and Zach Thieme won that match in a third-set super tiebreak, 5-7, 7-5, 10-6.
The Golden Eagles are 3-0 for the season and play at Covenant Christian on Saturday. Guerin Catholic will play the host Warriors in a conference match, and also take on Northwestern.
