The Hamilton Heights boys tennis team got its first taste of competition on Wednesday, as the Huskies hosted Tipton for a scrimmage.
It was a good day for Heights coach Wayne Rupe to see what his team had to offer, and after the varsity had finished up its time on the courts, the coach was pleased with what he saw.
“From what I’ve seen so far, I think we’ll have a really good season this year,” said Rupe. “We got some good senior leadership and then some juniors mixed in there that are going to be really, really strong.”
Leading the way is junior Ben Wolfgang, who will play No. 1 singles again this season. Two seniors are next in line, with Nick Rice at No. 2 singles and Erik Malott at No. 3 singles. Junior Tanner Maynard is also a solid singles prospect; he played No. 4 singles at the scrimmage.
The No. 1 doubles team is a pair of seniors, Jake Martin and Josh Russell. Juniors Grant Cavanaugh and Colin Weber are at the No. 2 doubles position.
Rupe said he is anticipating a good year for the Huskies, and that would include a top three or four finish in the Hoosier Conference tournament, “which would be exceptional for us,” he said.
Heights will begin its regular season Saturday by hosting its own Husky Invitational.
“It’s a position tournament with Frankton, Heritage Christian, Bethany Christian and Madison-Grant, which should be a lot of fun,” said Rupe.
