Boys swimming state finals: Carmel, Fishers, HSE send many on to finals

The IHSAA boys swimming state preliminaries took place Friday evening at the IUPUI Natatorium, and three Hamilton County teams are primed for high finishes in today’s finals.
Carmel, the five-time defending state champion, is in good position to make it six in a row after qualifying 19 swims to the finals. The Greyhounds have 16 swims in the championship heat, with three making the consolation heat.
Two Carmel swimmers earned the top seed in two events. Jake Mitchell is first in the 200 and 500 freestyles, while Wyatt Davis holds the top seed in the individual medley and backstroke. The Greyhounds’ 400 free relay team also finished first in the prelims, getting the top seed there.
Carmel’s two other relays (medley and 200 free) also reached the championship heat. The other championship qualifiers were: Kayden Lancaster in the 200 free, Gus Rothrock and Ryan Malicki in the IM, Rothrock in the butterfly, Griffin Hadley in the 100 free, Lancaster in the 500 free, Hadley and Nolan Kopp in the backstroke and Malicki in the breaststroke. The Greyhounds also sent Kopp to the consolation heat of the 200 free, while Griffin Seaver made the consolations of the butterfly and the 500 free.
Fishers had a solid prelims, qualifying nine swims for the finals. Seven of the Tigers’ swims made it to the championship heat, including all three of the 500 free: Jackson Carlile, Kyle Ponsler and Aaron Frollo finished 2-4-5.
Carlile and Frollo also reached the championship heat of the 200 free, with Ponsler making the fast heat of the IM. The Tigers’ 400 free relay team also qualified for the championship heat. Fishers’ two consolation qualifiers were Connor Carlile in the IM and the 200 free relay.
Hamilton Southeastern also did well in the prelims, sending eight swims to the final. Five Royals swims qualified for the championship heat, including all three relays; the 200 free relay team earned the top seed. Keegan Streett will also swim in the championship heat, in the 200 and 100 freestyles.
Three more HSE swims made the consolation heat: DJ Rogers qualified in the 50 and 100 freestyles, while Evan Sellers made the consolation of the 500 free.
Westfield’s Cameron Clayton swam in two individual events and two relays at state, placing 18th in the butterfly. University’s Keegan Priest finished 28th in the backstroke.
Today’s championships begin with the diving preliminaries at 9 a.m., with the semi-finals to follow. Finals in the swimming and diving begin at 1 p.m.
Complete Hamilton County results now follow. Positions 1-8 qualify for championship heat, positions 9-16 qualify for consolation heat, positions 17-18 are alternates.
