Two weeks ago, Guerin Catholic’s Ty Gingerich made a second-round surge at the IHSAA boys golf state finals, and that gave him a third-place finish.
Gingerich followed the same script on Tuesday at the Indiana Golf Association’s Boys State Junior Championship, which is taking place this week at Purdue University’s Kampen Course. The Golden Eagles senior-to-be shot a three-under par 69 to pull into a tie for fourth place in the second round of the 36-hole stroke play contest. Gingerich made five birdies in his round.
Overall, Gingerich finished stroke play with a two-over par 146 over two days. As a result, he will be seeded fourth for the match play portion of the championship, which begins today. Gingerich will play Chase Claymier of Evansville in the first round.
Noblesville’s Nels Surtani, a junior-to-be at Park Tudor, also carded a 146 during stroke play. Surtani is seeded fifth in match play and will take on Benjamin Burgan of Westfield, a sophomore-to-be at Guerin Catholic, in the first round.
Two more Hamilton County players finished in the top 10 as part of a five-way tie for seventh. Noblesville’s Danny Paris, a recent Cathedral graduate, carded a 148 and earned the ninth seed. He plays Connor Proudman of Crown Point in the first round of match play.
Nick Dentino, a senior-to-be for state champion Carmel, drained four birdies as part of his second round effort, a one-under par 71. Dentino finished stroke play at 148 and earned the 10th seed; he plays Sam McWilliams of McCordsville to open match play.
In all, 21 golfers with Hamilton County ties are participating in the match play portion of the Boys State Junior Championship.
