Boys soccer sectional roundup: Guerin Catholic stuns No. 1 Zionsville

Guerin Catholic shocked the state on the first day of sectionals.
The No. 9-ranked Golden Eagles got out to a fast start against No. 1 Zionsville, then held off the Eagles in the second half to win 2-1 in Monday’s opening day of play in Class 3A Sectional 10 at Carmel. Guerin Catholic scored both of its goals in the first half.
Daniel Cloran and Noah Dewaal found the back of the net for the Golden Eagles. Zionsville scored its goal in the second half, but was stopped time and again by GC goalkeeper Will Oberndorfer, who had nine saves.
Guerin will play Westfield in the first game of today’s semi-finals.

First-round play at Carmel continued on Tuesday with the host and No. 16-ranked Greyhounds falling to Brebeuf Jesuit 2-1.
The Braves scored their first goal with 14:29 left in the first half. Carmel finally broke through for the equalizer with 5:35 remaining when Riley Shives found the back of the net. But Brebeuf came back immediately, scoring the game-winner 36 seconds later.
“Credit to their game plan,” said Greyhounds coach Shane Schmidt. “It worked to a tee. They played with a lot of emotion. We did too. Our boys played extremely hard. I’m very proud of the effort that we gave and what they did and everything else.”
Carmel ended its season with a 9-5-3 record.

Hamilton Heights lost to Frankfort 2-1 Tuesday in the first round of the Class 2A Sectional 25 at Lebanon.
The Hot Dogs scored first, converting a second-chance goal with 6:54 left. The Huskies answered back immediately when Nahuel Zarate found Josh Thorpe for the equalizer, and the 1-1 score stood at the half.
Frankfort got its game-winning goal with 14:50 left in the second half. Caleb Grabarz had four saves for Heights, and Luke Vanderwall was the player of the game.
The Huskies ended their season at 9-8-1.

University won an all-county game with Sheridan 6-0 Tuesday in the first round of Class 1A Sectional 40 action at Heritage Christian.
The No. 2-ranked Trailblazers scored three goals in each half. A complete list of scorers was not available.
University will play the second semi-final game at 7 p.m. tonight, taking on the host and No. 4-ranked Eagles. Sheridan finished its season with a 5-10-2 record.
