Boys soccer: Carmel, University get Thursday wins

The Carmel boys soccer team won its Senior Night game on Thursday, beating Cathedral 2-0 at Murray Stadium.
Two seniors scored goals for the Class 3A No. 13 Greyhounds: AJ Caito and Baenan Mckeown. Caiton also had an assist. Another senior, TJ Barrett, recorded the shutout at goal.
Carmel coach Shane Schmidt called the game “a good effort” for Senior Night.
“I thought we did a good job of keeping our composure,” said Schmidt.
The ‘Hounds are 9-3-1 and play tonight at 2A No. 2 Guerin Catholic.

University, ranked No. 3 in 1A, cruised to a 10-0 win over Western Boone Thursday in a home game.
Remy Lance, one of the Trailblazers’ senior captains, broke the school record for most goals in a season. Lance has scored 18 goals during the season. The other two senior captains are Julien Bentaieb and Josh Oldham.
University coach Alex Baumgardt said the three captains provide lots of “vocal leadership,” but also show leadership with their play as well. Sophomore Christopher is also a scoring threat for the ‘Blazers.
“We have multiple players with double-digit goals,” said Baumgardt.
University is 10-2-2 for the season, and hosts the North West Warriors Home School on Tuesday.

Westfield, ranked No. 16 in 3A, played to a 2-2 tie with 3A No. 19 Harrison in a Thursday home game.
Declan Wheeler and Yahir Lopez each scored one goal for the Shamrocks, with Marlon Gomez and Jacob Shurman each handing out one assist. Liam Lloyd made eight saves as goalkeeper.
Westfield is 8-3-2 and plays at 3A No. 15 Plainfield on Saturday morning.

Sheridan dropped a 6-1 Hoosier Heartland Conference game at Eastern on Thursday.
Austin Bond scored the Blackhawks’ goal, with Donovan Aleman providing the assist. Carson Huffman made six saves.
Sheridan is 1-3 in conference play and 2-8 overall.
