The Carmel boys golf team won the loaded State Preview meet, which took place Saturday at Prairie View Golf Club.
The annual meet always features a roster of the best teams in the state, and this year was no exception. All of the top five teams in the high school golf rankings were there, and a total of 13 of the top 20. The Greyhounds are rated No. 2, and won the event with a score of 291.
Carmel was helped out by under-par rounds from two of its golfers. Nick Dentino shot a four-under par 68 to take second individually, while Clay Stirsman was third with a round of two-under par 70.
“Everybody played well today,” said Greyhounds coach Chard Reid. “We had two guys that played really well. We were struggling early.”
Reid said his team “got off to a pretty rough start,” at one point five or six over par through the first five holes. But Carmel played steady after that, eventually finishing three-over par with its 291.
“The back nine was really good for us today, and proud of the way the boys hung in there and stuck with it,” said Reid.
Seventh-ranked Zionsville took second with a 296, while No. 5 Bishop Dwenger was third with 299. Westfield, the state’s No. 3 team, was fourth by shooting 303. Andrew Lewis placed fourth with a round of two-under par 70. Drake Biggs shot 75 and Ethan Lutz scored 77.
Fourth-ranked Noblesville finished in sixth place with a score of 312. Jacob Deakyne continued his solid play by carding a 73, with Jack Barnes shooting 77.
No. 17-ranked Fishers scored 314, with three players in the 70s. Noah Chamberlin carded 76, followed by Caleb Bopp with a 77 and Shivom Patel with 79.
Guerin Catholic, ranked 11th, also had three players in the 70s as it scored 316. Andrew White carded 76, Ben Burgan shot 77 and Ty Gingerich scored 79.
