Carmel used a strong defensive second quarter and an equally strong offensive third quarter to score a 64-49 win over Noblesville Friday in an all-county game at the Eric Clark Activity Center.
The Millers led the Class 4A No. 9 Greyhounds 12-11 after the first period. E.J. Smith scored four points, while Cooper Bean and Cameron Karns both hit a 3-pointer. Carmel’s defense took over in the second period, allowing Noblesville only three points. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds scored 10, and they held a 21-15 advantage at halftime. Peter Suder scored 11 in the first half.
“They were pretty good defensively in the first half,” said Carmel coach Ryan Osborn. “I thought our movement got better as the game went on. We’re still trying to figure out how to stay connected, how to play together, what that looks like in the half court. They came in with a good plan, their kids played well to start the game. Our guys did a good job of sticking with it.”
The Greyhounds got going in the third quarter, pouring in 26 points. Sam Orme had eight points during that quarter, including a 3, while Suder scored six points. Carmel led 47-34 after three, and added another 17 in the fourth quarter. Jared Bonds scored nine in that period.
Suder led all scorers with 21 points, and also had five rebounds and four assists. Sam Orme added 13 points and collected eight rebounds. Bonds finished the game with 12 points.
“We got to the free-throw line a ltle bit better in this game than we had in the past few games,” said Osborn. Carmel was 12-of-16 from the line during the game.
Smith led the Millers with 18 points, including 10 in the third quarter, and had three 3-pointers. Preston Roberts added 13 points, while Aaron Fine threw in three 3s for nine points.
“I thought the first quarter, we did a really nice job of executing our game plan,” said Noblesville coach Scott McClelland. But the coach said his team struggled in the second quarter.
“They did a good job with their defense,” said McClelland. “We had a couple costly turnovers. But we were right there. I thought we were battling. I thought we were kicking, scrapping, clawing. They just wore us down. They did a good job with their half-court defense.”
Carmel is 3-2 and is back in action tonight, hosting 4A No. 5 Fishers. Noblesville is 0-3 and also plays tonight, at Anderson.
