The Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre has announced its 2021-22 Season.
Civic’s season will begin with The Color Purple, which was originally scheduled for this spring. This musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel spotlights Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years forms the arc of this epic story. The Color Purple will run Oct. 7-23.
Returning to the Knebel stage is Elf the Musical which premiered at Civic in 2019. This modern-day holiday classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner elf. After all, the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear. Elf the Musical will run this holiday season from Dec. 3-24.
The first play of the season is The Diary of Anne Frank. Published long afterwards by her father, the only family survivor, this play records the 25 months that two Jewish families spent in hiding from the Gestapo in an Amsterdam warehouse attic. The constant secrecy, growing hunger and friction of living in such cramped conditions could not dull Anne’s vibrant personality or her passion for living. The Diary of Anne Frank will also include student matinees and will run Feb. 4-19.
The second play will be Wait Until Dark, which will run from March 11-26.
Ending the season will be Matilda, based on the classic Roald Dahl novel. Matilda centers on a five-year-old girl with a wild imagination and love of learning. When she discovers she has supernatural powers, she uses them to escape an unloving family and an evil headmistress. Matilda will run April 29 to May 14.
Alongside the mainstage productions, The Cat in the Hat will also return in February. The Jr. Civic musical will be The Little Mermaid Jr. and the Young Artist’s Program will perform 42nd Street and Revue! To learn more about each show and see when tickets go on sale, visit civictheatre.org.
