The Sheridan girls basketball team’s season came to an end in the final eight for the second consecutive year Saturday.

The Class 2A No. 11 Blackhawks faced No. 2 Rensselaer Central in the semifinals of the Logansport semi-state and played tough with the Bombers in the first half. But Rensselaer took over in the second half and eventually won 61-36; the Bombers beat Eastside in the championship game to advance to the 2A state finals.

Sheridan and Rensselaer were tied at 12-12 after one quarter, with senior Kenzie Garner scoring six points. The Bombers moved ahead 23-21 by halftime; Garner continued to keep the ‘Hawks in the game with five points in the second quarter.

But Rensselaer took over in the third period, outscoring Sheridan 21-6 for a 44-27 lead going into the fourth. The Bombers added another 17 points in that quarter to finish the game.

Garner, a Ferris State commit, reached double-double status with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She also blocked four shots. Senior Cecilia Timme collected 10 rebounds.

Sheridan coach Jaidlin Bradshaw said she was “very proud” of her team.

“Not many teams can do this back-to-back years,” said Bradshaw. “I’m really proud of their effort.”

Bradshaw also praised her seniors. “They’re a really special group,” she said. “Better humans than they are basketball players. They don’t quit. They make themselves and everyone around them better every day. Obviously, they’re great basketball players and they’ve left quite the legacy. They’ve really incorporated the community in our program. Really, really proud of them.”

The Blackhawks finished their season with a 25-2 record.
