Longtime Guerin Catholic boys basketball coach Bobby Allen is heading to the home of the Royals.
Allen has been hired as the new head coach at Hamilton Southeastern, it was announced on Wednesday. Allen replaces John Ashworth, who had coached the Royals for the past four seasons.
Allen spent seven years as the Golden Eagles’ head coach, succeeding GC’s first coach, Pete Smith, in 2018. The Golden Eagles won state championships under Smith in 2012 and 2015, and Allen continued that success, putting together winning seasons in all seven of his years there for a record of 128-56.
In addition, Allen led Guerin Catholic to four sectional championships, three regional titles and a 2023 Class 3A state runner-up finish.
“There is passion and excitement surrounding the tradition of all HSE athletic programs, and it’s our expectation to strive for excellence in everything we do,” Southeastern Athletic Director Drew Tower said in a news release on the HSE Athletics website. “We are thrilled to welcome Coach Allen as the new leader of our boys basketball program.”
“I am truly excited and grateful for the opportunity to be the next boys basketball coach at Hamilton Southeastern, and I’m honored to become a part of the Royals family,” Allen said in the news release. “Coaching and teaching have been my passion throughout my career, and my family and I are looking forward to this new chapter in our lives.”
Pete Smith sent the following statement to The Reporter: “I could not have been more happy having Bobby follow me at Guerin Catholic. I’m sad for our Golden Eagles, but I’m happy Bobby’s getting this opportunity at HSE.”
Prior to coaching the Golden Eagles, Allen spent six years as the coach of Knightstown, from 2010 to 2016. Allen turned around a struggling program that produced winning records during the second half of his tenure there. He was named the 2014 Mid-Hoosier Conference Coach of the Year.
