‘Blazers win battle of unbeatens

University won a battle of undefeated Class 1A ranked teams Tuesday evening at The U Center. The third-ranked Trailblazers jumped out to a big early lead and defeated 11th-ranked Waldron 63-42.
Junior Lindsey Syrek paced University with 23 points, 16 rebounds and six blocked shots. Senior Brooke Andrus had 11 points.
The Trailblazers outscored Waldron 15-2 in the first 2:30 of the game, scoring on seven of their first eight possessions. University forced the Mohawks in to five turnovers in the opening spurt.
Syrek scored 15 seconds into the game. Jhordan McGuire split a pair of foul shots after an Andrus steal and a three pointer by Andrus gave University a 6-0 lead just 45 seconds in to the game causing Waldron to take a timeout.
McGuire found Syrek for a layin before Waldron made a pair of free throws to get their first points. University came back with seven points in a 25 second span for the 15-2 lead an another Waldron timeout. Lucy Snyder found McGuire for a 10-footer from the baseline. Syrek kicked the ball out to Andrus at the top of the key for a three pointer and Lily Snyder had a steal and layin with 5:25 left in the first.
University stretched their lead to 23-8 at the quarter, leading by as many as 17 points. Lily Snyder found Lucy Snyder for a basket, Syrek added a bucket, Hallie Harrison made a free throw and Haley Tomlinson drilled a three pointer to close out the quarter.
The University lead fluctuated between 15 and 24 points throughout the last three quarters as the Blazers improved to 3-0. Waldron fell to 3-1. University is next in action on Tuesday at Brebeuf Jesuit.
