The University boys basketball team opened the season with a convincing 64-37 win over Indianapolis Shortridge Saturday night at The U Center.
Jacob Sager and Max Greenamoyer had 14 points each to lead the Trailblazers. Camden Brown was the third Blazer in double figures with 10 points. Senior Sam Mervis had nine points and a team-high seven assists.
Junior Aaron Stallings made his first varsity start and had the first points of the season, hitting a 3-pointer to start a 9-0 University run to start the game. Brown had a pair of baskets and Sager one in the opening spurt. The Trailblazers stretched their lead to 16-2 midway through the period and led 22-5 after the first period. Sager and Greenamoyer each had six points in the period and University assisted on seven of its nine field goals in the period.
University continued to add to its lead through the middle quarters of the game, building a 47-21 lead after three quarters. Shortridge made a run early in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 51-35 before a Brown bucket and free throw stemmed the tide and started University on a 13-2 run to close out the game.
“I thought our energy and focus and togetherness was all there tonight. I was very happy with the energy brought by Aaron Stallings and Jacob Sager throughout the game. They made a lot of big plays throughout the game” said University coach Brandon Lafferman.
Jaden Brookins led Shortridge with nine points. The Blue Devils fall to 0-2 on the season.
University is next in action Saturday, Dec. 7 when it travels to Speedway to face the Sparkplugs.
