‘Blazers get third straight victory

BROWNSBURG – The University boys won their third straight game to open the season, running past Bethesda Christian 74-34 Friday night.
The Trailblazers used a balanced scoring attack with ten players scoring, with a trio of seniors reaching double figures. Sam Mervis led with 14 points, Max Greenamoyer added 13 and Korey Ash-Simpson had 10 off the bench.
The game started slowly with University holding a 3-0 lead midway through the first period on a free throw from Greenamoyer and two foul shots from Camden Brown. Mervis hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3:58 remaining for the first basket and a 6-0 Blazers lead. University had a 16-6 lead after the first period with Mervis scoring five points and Ash-Simpson four.
Mervis scored the first seven points of the second quarter on a pair of free throws, a 3-point basket and a lay-in off a steal. Brown added a rebound basket to put University up 25-6 and the Trailblazers led 31-12 at halftime.
Bethesda Christian threatened to climb back in to the game in the third period, scoring the first six points. Jacob Sager quieted the home crowd with rebound basket to ignite a 17-2 University run that finally blew the game open. Sager had six points in the period and Joe Martin added four.
Mervis had a team-high six assists and four steals. Brown led University with seven rebounds. The Trailblazers shot 59 percent from the field.
“I thought Korey (Ash-Simpson) and Larry (Pierce) brought great energy off the bench tonight” said University coach Brandon Lafferman. “I was pleased with our defensive intensity tonight and we are looking forward to our conference opener tomorrow (Saturday) night at Liberty Christian.”
The Trailblazers and Lions will play a tripleheader. The boys junior varsity game begins at 4:30 followed by the girls varsity contest and the boys varsity contest.
Bethesda Christian was led by Braden Chapman who had a game-high 19 points, including 9 of 12 free throws. The Patriots fall to 2-2 on the season.

    Since we live in Florida, these articles and video highlights allows me to track the Blazer’s games and keep current on how my grandson, Camden, is doing. Thank you for providing the reports/updated.
