University defeated Guerin Catholic 56-45 in an all-county girls contest Thursday afternoon at the Eagles Nest.
The Trailblazers used an 18-0 run in the second quarter to take a 30-15 halftime lead and led by double digits throughout the second half.
The Trailblazers had three players in double figures with senior Keira Bright leading the way with 17. Sophomore Leah Norvell had 15 points and sophomore Charlotte Conyers added 13. Freshman Caroline Ford had 12 to lead the Golden Eagles.
University jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the game behind two three pointers from Norvell, a Mack Feeney bucket and a steal and lay-in by Bright. The Blazers led 12-7 at the end of the opening period.
Kori Dues hit two three pointers from the right corner in the first minute of the second quarter to put Guerin Catholic on top 13-12. Norvell answered with a lay-in to regain the lead for University and the Trailblazers never trailed again. Conyers continued the run with a steal and lay-in before Bright made a three from the left corner. Conyers scored on a rebound and Anyah Turley put University up 23-13 with 4:05 left in the half.
Conyers went coast to coast for a 25-13 lead forcing a GC timeout. Conyers made a three pointer and Feeney scored off a nice assist for a 30-13 lead with 1:33 left. Emery Cardinal added a basket for the Golden Eagles with two seconds left in the half to end their scoring drought.
Annie Murphy opened the second half with a three pointer from the right corner for Guerin Catholic before University scored the next seven when Bright scored off an inbound play, Norvell made a triple and Bright scored again for a 37-18 lead. University led 43-24 at the end of three on a driving bucket by Norvell.
Guerin Catholic chipped away throughout the fourth quarter, getting within 49-38 with 1:11 left on another Murphy three pointer. The Eagles were called for a technical foul for reaching across the baseline on the inbound. Bright made the ensuing foul shots and added two more charity tosses five seconds later to put the lead back to 15 and the Blazers closed out the win.
Feeney stuffed the stat sheet for University finishing with 10 rebounds, seven steals, six assists, five blocked shots and five points. Norvell had nine rebounds and four assists. Conyers had seven rebounds and Bright four assists.
Dues and Murphy each had 10 points for GC.
University improved to 7-6 on the season and will travel to Class 3A No. 6 Western on Tuesday. Guerin Catholic falls to 6-9 and will host Park Tudor Wednesday.
