Blackhawks earn HHC sweep

The Sheridan basketball teams swept a Hoosier Heartland Conference doubleheader with Clinton Prairie Friday at Larry Hobbs Hall.

The girls went first, and the Blackhawks breezed past the Gophers 58-18. Sheridan led 16-7 after the opening quarter and 32-9 at halftime. A 19-point third quarter gave the ‘Hawks a 51-17 lead.

Kenzie Garner scored 28 points, including four 3-pointers, and made six steals and grabbed five rebounds. Mackenzie Smith added nine points; both she and Sadie Timme collected seven rebounds each. Brielle Garner drained 2 triples on her way to eight points. Cecilia Smith handed out seven assists.

The Sheridan boys’ game was closer, but the ‘Hawks pulled out a 59-58 victory in their HHC opener. The first quarter finished in a 14-14 tie, with Sheridan pulling ahead 33-29 at halftime. Caleb Wright nailed three first-half 3s and scored 11 points, while Trey Page’s three triples gave him nine points. Devon Hamilton scored eight in the first half.

The Blackhawks led 41-37 after three quarters. The Gophers outscored Sheridan 21-18 in the fourth period, but the ‘Hawks held on for the win. Page made a steal to seal the Sheridan victory; he totaled six 3s for 18 points.

Damon Winston and Hamilton both scored 14 points, while Wright scored 11 points.

The Sheridan girls are 2-0 in the conference and 6-1 overall. Their next game is Thursday at Rossville, another HHC contest. The Sheridan boys are 2-1 and play Monday at Faith Christian.
