Sheridan is trying for back-to-back Hoosier Heartland Conference championships, and the Blackhawks are off to a good start.
The ‘Hawks dominated Tri-Central 52-0 Friday night at Bud Wright Stadium. Sheridan scored 27 points in the first quarter and led 45-0 at halftime.
“I thought we played pretty good,” said Wright. “We had a little bit of a slow start, but after that I think we played pretty good.”
The Blackhawks scored eight touchdowns, with five of them coming through the air. All four of the first-quarter scores were by pass, starting with Drake Delph’s 38-yarder to Caine Spencer.
Minutes later, Jesse Kolb teamed with Delph for a 70-yard touchdown, which would be the longest passing score of the night. Later, Kolb caught a 27-yard TD from Nick Burnell, and Spencer and Delph teamed up again for a 10-yard score with under two minutes.
In the second period, Kolb notched his third touchdown reception of the night, a 54-yard pass from Delph. After that, Sheridan everything else on the ground. James Manis added two more TDs in the quarter, from 37 and 10 yards. Manis would also make four extra point kicks on the night.
The ‘Hawks scored one more time in the game, with Burnell making a 91-yard sprint to the end zone midway through the third quarter. Burnell totaled 96 yards in two carries, while Manis had eight rushes for 69 yards. Delph had an outstanding game, completing six of nine passes for 210 yards and four touchdowns. Kolb totaled five catches for 191 yards and three TDs.
Of course, Sheridan’s defense played well, too. In fact, this marked the second straight game where the Blackhawks did not allow a point.
“I thought they played exceptionally good most of the time,” said Wright.
Sheridan is now 2-0 in the conference and 2-1 overall. The ‘Hawks will go on the road next week, traveling to Carroll for another HHC contest. The Cougars are 2-1 overall and played their conference opener on Friday, beating Taylor 28-27.
