Duke provides STEM opportunities in the great outdoors

The Tom & Soni Sheehan Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville (BGCN) recently received a $3,700 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation in support of STEM & Nature programming during Fall Break at the Club’s 20-acre outdoor space – Camp Crosser.

“STEM education will prepare students for the skills needed to succeed in a multitude of careers,” said Mark LaBarr, government and community relations manager at Duke Energy. “We’re excited to provide educators and mentors some of the tools they use in doing their work.”

The support of the Duke Energy Foundation provided 50 youth campers with the opportunity to take part in STEM activities that fully immersed them into science-related topics in nature. The weeklong program, orchestrated by Nyla Nova STEMversity, engaged campers in activities such as testing soil types and moisture levels, learning how to use a compass, and exploring horticulture.

“STEMversity made a huge impact on our campers during their visits each day,” BGCN Recreation Director Sophie Collier said. “Throughout the week, campers were super excited for STEMverisity and fascinated about how much they learned about nature all around Camp Crosser. Without a doubt, their favorite part was exploring on a nature scavenger hunt while using their new knowledge about plants and cardinal directions that had them bursting with excitement.”
