Dining With Denise

Over the last several years, I have really become a foodie. We are lucky that Hamilton County is now home to many different restaurant concepts and types of cuisines. I would be delighted if you would join me at local establishments for “Dining with Denise.” Cheers!

Bring the family and get swept up with Disney’s high-flying Mary Poppins, now on stage at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre through July 10. Based on one of the most popular Disney films of all time, this musical is nothing short of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

The food was a family-friendly buffet. I enjoyed the salad bar. The salad was fresh and crispy with several toppings, and the thousand island dressing was delicious. The roast beef carving station had well done and medium well; I, of course, took the lesser done and I added the side jus and horseradish. I was happy that each table had its own salt and pepper. So, fill up on a large dinner plate full of salad, have some wine and then go back for some carved roast beef and add the jus and horseradish and season it at your table. The fish was a second contender and adequately appealing to the palate.

The show was PHENOMENAL though. I really enjoyed the show. There was not a bad seat in the house. A seats offer a great view and it really feels like you are part of the action.

Doors open at 5:30, so get there early, get a drink and chat. They have table service for beverages and desserts. The show doesn’t start till 8, so plenty of time for a relaxing leisurely meal and some wine.

The show is a full three hours with an intermission. After final bows, we did not leave Beef and Boards till after 11. So, it is not a bad cost for a full five hours of dinner and entertainment.

The buffet rolled away and the stage slid forward and rotated with several different sets. The actors were fantastic! I was very impressed with the quality of the show … it was much like Broadway.

Bert, a jack-of-all-trades, introduces the audience to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again.

The musical is based on the beloved Disney film. Nominated for seven Tony Awards, Mary Poppins includes a score filled with timeless classics such as “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Step in Time” and the Academy Award-winning “Chim-Chim Cher-ee.”

Mary Poppins is on stage for 58 performances through July 10 in the intimate space of Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. Tickets range from $51 to $76 and include Chef Larry Stoops’ buffet and select beverages.
