The Class 2A No. 3 University girls took on a tall order Friday night, travelling to Lawrence Central to take on the Class 4A No. 12 Bears and trailed by only two points late in the first half before Lawrence Central took control of the game and went on to a 73-55 win over the Trailblazers.
Lawrence Central looked poised to run away with the contest early, jumping out to an 11-1 advantage before Taylor Seay scored University’s first field goal with 4:00 left in the first quarter. The Blazers cut the advantage to 20-12 at the end of the first quarter on a pair of buckets by Payton Seay.
The Bears opened up a 27-15 lead three minutes in to the second period before Payton Seay heated up. The University senior had ten points in the quarter and hit a pair of foul shots to pull the Trailblazers within 29-25 with 1:57 on the clock. After a defensive stop, Kelsey DuBois scored on a rebound and University was within two points at 29-27 with 45 seconds left. Lawrence Central scored the last five points of the half, including an old fashioned three-point play with less than one second remaining to take a 34-27 lead to the halftime locker room.
Lawrence Central put the game away in the third quarter by holding University scoreless for the first four minutes and building a 46-27 lead. The Bears had a 17-0 run spanning halftime and University was not able to crawl back in to the game.
Payton Seay led the Trailblazers with 22 points, knocking down three three-pointers and all seven of her foul shots. DuBois had 17 points and Taylor Seay 11 off the bench.
University falls to 3-3 on the season and will look to snap a three-game losing streak Tuesday night when they travel to Brebeuf Jesuit.
