Baseball: Tigers come back to win opener, Westfield gets two easy victories

The Fishers baseball team opened its season on Monday with a 7-4 comeback win over Homestead.
After falling behind 2-0 to the Spartans, the Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the first when Joey Brenczewski hit a home run in Fishers’ first at-bat. Homestead would eventually go up 4-1 by the middle of the fourth, but the Tigers cut it to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning when Caulin Brown hit a sacrifice fly to score JP Preston.
Fishers then stormed back in the fifth inning by scoring five runs. Jack Braun tied the game with a two-RBI single. Minutes later, the Tigers had the lead when Jack Brown sent a two-run hit into right field. Caulin Brown then smacked a double into center field to score Jack Brown. That gave Fishers a three-run lead, and the Tigers held on from there.
Brenczewski finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate. Jack Brown got the pitching win for the Tigers, while Mason Sweeney threw five strikeouts in two innings for a save. Joey Wimoth struck out six.

Westfield picked up two easy wins in its first two games.
On Monday, the Shamrocks sailed past Terre Haute South 10-2. The Braves scored in the top of the first inning, but Westfield blasted back for five runs in the bottom of the first. Keaton Mahan got the ‘Rocks on the board with a two-run triple, Jack Woodard got home when Casey Fanelli reached on error. Fanelli was sent home by a Cody South triple, then South scored on a wild pitch.
Westfield added four runs in the third inning. Isaac Minder stole home, Joey Wolfe scored on a passed ball, Quentin Markle doubled in Sutcliffe, then later scored when Trey Dorton reached on error.
Woodard added the Shamrocks’ 10th run in the fifth inning when he scored on an error. Both he and Markle had two runs, with Markle and Sutcliffe each getting two hits. Mahan threw five innings for the win, striking out seven.
The Shamrocks took care of Covington 12-2 in five innings on Tuesday. Markle, Fanelli and Minder all had two hits; Markle and Minder hit one double, as did Mac Clarke and Brayden Hibler. Markle drove in three runs.
Kade Robinson got the pitching win, with Markle striking out five in relief.

Carmel split its first two games of the season, starting with a 6-0 win at Brebeuf Jesuit on Monday.
The Greyhounds opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning: Nathan MacLaren singled on base, then scored right away off a center field hit from Nick Mitchell, who later scored on an error.
Mitchell scored again in the third inning when Daniel Cunningham batted him in with a center field hit. Carmel added three more runs in the fifth inning: Mitchell scored on a passed ball, JD Rogers got home on a wild pitch, then Jackson Michaels scored on another wild pitch.
Mitchell was 4-for-4 at the plate and stole seven bases. Aidan McConnell threw three innings for the pitching win, tossing four strikeouts.
On Tuesday, the Greyhounds fell to Zionsville 6-0. The Eagles held Carmel to three hits, one each from MacLaren, Mitchell and Michaels. Rogers had a stolen base.

Noblesville dropped an 11-0 opener at Cathedral in five innings on Monday.

The Golden Eagles scored their run in the bottom of the first inning. Clay Patton hit a double to get on base, then scored on a right field hit by Braden Reel.
