Baseball: Tigers, ‘Blazers win regional championships

The Fishers baseball team took care of business at Kokomo Municipal Stadium on Saturday, winning the Class 4A Kokomo regional with two solid wins.
In the semi-finals, the Tigers beat No. 6-ranked Homestead 8-4. Both teams scored a run in the first inning; Fishers got its run when Carson Dunn scored on an RBI groundout by Jack Brown.
The Spartans jumped ahead 4-1 in the top of the second inning. The Tigers got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, both times having a hit batsman with the bases loaded. Dunn was hit and that scored JP Preston, then Joey Brenczewski got hit and that sent Jack Braun home.
The score remained 4-3 until the fifth inning. Fishers took the lead with one swing, as Braun singled in Jack Brown and Matt Bryant to get the Tigers up 5-4. Fishers added three runs in the sixth: Braun batted in Brenczewski with a base hit, then Bryant and Braun scored after Gavin Clayton reached on error.
Braun finished the game with two hits. Mason Sweeney was the winning pitcher, throwing four and a third innings in relief, striking out seven and allowing only one hit.
The Tigers beat Harrison 7-5 in the championship game. Fishers rolled out to a 7-0 lead after three innings.
In the first inning, Brenczewski singled in Dunn to get the Tigers on the board. Fishers then put up four runs in the second inning: Dunn drew a bases-loaded walk to score Braun, Brenczewski singled in Zach Cox, Jack Brown got a bases-loaded walk to bring in Dom Oliverio, then Dunn scored on Caulin Brown’s sacrifice fly.
Dunn brought in two more Tigers runs in the third inning, as his double scored Braun and Cox. The Raiders scored four runs in the fourth and one in the sixth, but Kyle Manship went three up, three down in the seventh to finish the game.
Bewnczewski had two hits for Fishers. Tate Warner went five and a third innings for the win, with Manship relieving him and getting the save.
The Tigers are 22-12 and play Munster in the Class 4A north semi-state on Saturday, which will be played at either Kokomo or La Porte. Semi-state assignments will be released today.

University also cruised to another regional championship on Saturday, easily winning the Class 2A Cascade regional.
The No. 8-ranked Trailblazers beat No. 6 Centerville 12-5 in the first game. A seven-run fourth inning made the difference in the game. The scoring started when Tyler Galyean singled in Thomas Price and Owen Schellhase, then Luke Hellman bunted Grady Hay home.
Adam Oxley came up next, and his three-run home run also brought in Galyean and Hellman. Price came back up later in the inning, and he doubled in Seth Hogg. University led 9-1 after that and held the lead from there.
Hellman and Hogg both had three hits, while Oxley drove in four runs. Galyean scored three runs. Matt Moore went three and a third innings for the win, striking out six.
In the championship game, the ‘Blazers scored early and often, which led them to an 8-2 win over Parke Heritage. University put up four runs in the first inning.
Jake Hooker got the first run home, as his sacrifice fly scored Hellman. Moore came up next, and he blasted a three-run homer, also scoring Oxley and Hogg.
Price singled in Moore for a run in the third inning. The Trailblazers added three runs in the sixth, with Moore doubling in Hogg and Hooker, then later scoring on a wild pitch.
Moore went 3-for-5 at the plate, while Price also had two hits. Grayson Knight threw five innings for the win, tossing seven strikeouts.
University is 23-9 and plays Providence in the 2A south semi-state on Saturday. The game will take place at either Mooresville or Jasper.

Hamilton Heights dropped a semi-final game to No. 2-ranked Leo at the Class 3A Bellmont regional on Saturday.
The Lions scored all four of their runs in the third inning. The Huskies were held to four hits, including two by Erik Malott.
Heights finished its season 19-10, but not before winning a sectional title.
