Baseball: Strong start sends ‘Hounds past ‘Rocks

The Carmel baseball team started off strong in an all-county game with Westfield Monday at Hartman Field, and that led to a 16-6 win in five innings for the Class 4A No. 9 Greyhounds.
Carmel scored six runs in the first inning, which led off with a triple by Nick Mitchell. He would score on a single by Cody Kantz, who was in turn batted in by Griffin Wolf’s base hit. Alex Richter later hit a three-run triple, and Winston Berglund batted in the inning’s sixth run.
The 4A No. 2 Shamrocks scored one run in the top of the second inning, with Brayden Hibler’s center field hit getting Maximus Webster home. But Carmel poured in seven runs in the bottom of the inning, starting with a leadoff home run by Mitchell. The ‘Hounds led 13-1 once the inning was over, and kept its lead in double digits from there.
Mitchell and Richter both finished the game with two hits, with Richter totaling five RBIs. Daniel Cunningham scored three runs. Cameron Heaney pitched three innings for the win.
Quentin Markle and Keaton Mahan both had two hits for Westfield, and Markle scored two runs.
Carmel improved to 7-1-1 with the victory, while the Shamrocks were dealt their first loss of the year and are now 8-1-1.

University pulled away from Western Boone in the sixth inning, leading the 2A No. 9 Trailblazers to a 15-1 victory over the Stars in six innings on Monday.
WeBo scored its run in the first inning to take an early lead. But University jumped ahead in the second inning, scoring three runs. Thomas Price batted in Adam Oxley with a center field hit, then Jake Hooker hit a two-RBI single to score Seth Hogg and Price.
The ‘Blazers steadily added to their lead throughout the game, and finished things up with eight runs in the sixth inning. Price went 3-for-3 at the plate, batting in three runs and scoring two. Hooker had two hits, totaling in three RBIs.
Oxley and Hogg each were 2-for-3, with one of Oxley’s hits a double. Both scored three runs. Hogg got the pitching win, striking out seven in four innings. Tyler Galyean pitched the final two innings, tossing five strikeouts.
University is 6-3 and plays at Shortridge on Thursday.

Guerin Catholic was overwhelmed by 4A No. 8 Zionsville 16-3 in five innings on Monday.
The Golden Eagles stayed with Zionsville early, scoring one run each in the first two innings to lead 2-1. Aidan Morse hit a sacrifice fly to score Anthony Ferrucci in the first inning, and Davis Wagner scored in the second inning after Adam Novelen reached on error. But Zionsville took over after that, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Guerin Catholic was held to only one hit, a double by Wagner in the second inning. Morse and Will Fremion both had one RBI.
The Golden Eagles are 3-6 for the season.

Sheridan dropped a 12-2 Hoosier Heartland Conference game to Delphi in five innings on Monday.
The Blackhawks scored their first run in the third inning when Silas DeVaney singled home Cameron Hovey. Corbin Murray scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. DeVaney finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
Sheridan is 1-4 in conference play and 3-5 overall.
