Baseball: Speck’s perfect day helps ‘Hawks win at Tipton

Sheridan picked up a win at Tipton on Wednesday, beating the Blue Devils 7-3.
Both teams scored all of their runs in the first two innings. The Blackhawks got three on the board in the first inning, starting when Sean Speck hit a two-run home run. Cameron Hovey also scored. Kyle Archer later scored on an error.
In the second inning, Caine Spencer led off with a walk, then Steve Smith hit a double. Hovey batted both of them in with a left field hit. Speck came up next and hit a double. Hovey then scored on Archer’s RBI groundout, which moved Speck to third, and he was sent home when Silas DeVaney hit a sacrifice fly.
Speck was 4-for-4 at the plate. Reese Fisher got the pitching win.
On Tuesday, Sheridan lost a road game at Eastern 7-6. DeVaney got the Blackhawks on the board in the first inning with a two-run single, sending Smith and Hovey home. The Comets tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a two-run single.
Sheridan added a run in the second inning when Speck batted in Hovey, and another in the third after Jake O’Hara singled in DeVaney. Eastern tied it up again in the bottom of the third, with another two-run single.
Smith gave the ‘Hawks a 5-4 lead in the fourth after scoring on a wild pitch. But the Comets scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. Hovey hit a sixth-inning double to score Smith.
Hovey was 3-for-3 at the plate, with Smith and DeVaney both getting two hits. Nolan Buckner pitched the first four innings, striking out eight.
Sheridan is 10-5 for the season.

Huskies fall at Cathedral

Hamilton Heights dropped a 5-1 game at Cathedral on Wednesday.
The Huskies scored in the top of the third inning when Erik Malott doubled in Sam Allen. The Irish tied the game in the bottom of the inning, and the score stayed 1-1 until Cathedral scored four runs in the sixth inning.
Malott had two hits for the Huskies, both doubles. Nate Hulen also hit a double.
“We got notice late morning today that this game was available and we jumped at the chance to come play the Irish,” said Heights coach JR Moffatt. “Their program is as good as anyone around. It was a great chance to get some at bats and let some guys pitch who haven’t had the opportunity to.”
The Huskies are 6-9 and host Eastern at 5:30 p.m. today in their Senior Night game.

‘Hounds run away from North Central

Carmel ran away with its Metropolitan Conference game at North Central on Wednesday, winning 11-0 in six innings.
The Greyhounds scored one run each in the first two innings. Brayden Lentz hit a sacrifice fly to send Connor Gioia home, then Logan Urbanowski hit a solo home run in the second inning.
Carmel remained in front 2-0 until the sixth inning, when the ‘Hounds got going for nine runs. Lentz led off with a double, then Jackson Adams sent him home with a double. Christian Williams later hit a grand slam to get Carmel ahead 9-0.
Alex Brooks and Zach Vogt both had two hits, while Jared Greene batted in two runs with a double. Drew Olssen went five innings for the win, striking out eight.
The Greyhounds are 9-1 in the MIC and 15-6 overall, and will host North Central at 5:30 p.m. today at Hartman Field.

‘Blazers clinch PAAC championship

University clinched the Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference championship in a big way on Wednesday, beating Anderson Prep Academy 23-1 in five innings at RoundTripper Academy.
The Trailblazers scored in each inning, starting with five runs in the first. Alex Washlock led the way, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and another three batted in. Dawson Estep and Adam Oxley both had three hits, with Estep scoring three runs.
Nate Shatkowski had two hits, both doubles. He totaled four RBI and three runs scored. Ben Westerkamm, Tyler Galyean and Grayson Knight all had two hits.
Jacob Lange pitched three innings for the win. He struck out six and allowed no hits.
University is 8-9-1 and plays a doubleheader Saturday at Indianapolis Lutheran.

Lapel edges out Westfield

Westfield dropped a 2-1 game at Lapel on Tuesday.
The Shamrocks scored their run in the first inning, when Zach Collins singled in Trey Anderson. Collins finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate. Mason Cox threw seven strikeouts in three innings of relief, starter Tyler Smitherman struck out three in three innings.
“We made two costly mistakes tonight defensively that our offense wasn’t able to overcome unfortunately,” said Westfield coach Ryan Bunnell. “Smitherman and Cox gave us good outings, it’s a shame but that’s how this game can go. We have to keep working. It will be good to have a practice tomorrow night and get back to some fundamentals.”
Westfield is 9-7 and hosts Hamilton Southeastern at 6 p.m. today to begin a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series.

Golden Eagles split conference series with Roncalli

Guerin Catholic split a Circle City Conference series with Roncalli this week.
The Golden Eagles won the first game, beating the Rebels 4-3 Tuesday at the Guerin field. The contest was scoreless through four innings. Both teams scored two runs in the fifth; Keenan Taylor hit a double to sends Josh Schaaf and Wes Gingerich home.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth inning. Max Engelking smacked a double into center field, bringing in Dominic Ferrucci. The Golden Eagles got the winning run with one out in the seventh inning: Bennett Ely was hit a pitch, moved to second base on Nate Bingman’s single, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch.
Engelking and Luke Godfrey both had two hits for Guerin Catholic. Bingman got the pitching win, throwing the last two innings.
On Wednesday, the Golden Eagles lost Game 2 5-3 at Roncalli. Guerin scored two runs in the fourth inning: Bingman singled in Ely, then later scored on an error.
In the fifth inning, Wes Gingerich led off with a triple, then scored quickly on a wild pitch. That gave the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead, but the Rebels tied it up with three runs in the fifth, then scored two more in the sixth.
Taylor was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Braden Reel was 2-for-3. Engelking pitched four and a third innings, striking out five.
Guerin Catholic is 17-3 and plays Andrean at Notre Dame on Monday.
